Molluscum are caused by poxvirus with the lesions themselves containing the fluid through which the highly contagious virus is spread. It is scarring. Molluscum legions are quite common in children between the ages of two and ten years-old but generally heal on their own after several years. To avoid their spread, however, most pediatricians and dermatologists recommend treatment. A good fragrance-free hydrating skin regimen is helpful because some of these lesions spread into already dry skin patches or eczema. The treatment involves application of irritants to stimulate the child's immune system. Scraping the lesions is also another treatment.
